A Los Altos Public Lands Initiative
FORLosAltos is a local community group exploring a 2026 voter initiative focused on giving residents a stronger voice in decisions affecting community-owned public lands. This effort is inspired by recent community-led actions and policy decisions in neighboring cities, including Palo Alto and Menlo Park, where residents have asserted a greater public role in land use decisions involving public spaces.
On December 2, 2025, the Menlo Park City Council voted to place a citizen-initiated measure on the November 2026 ballot. That measure would prohibit the City from selling, leasing, donating, disposing of, or otherwise conveying city-owned downtown public parking lots and land without approval by a majority vote of residents—marking a significant shift toward voter oversight of public land decisions.
Building on this voter-driven momentum, Los Altos is uniquely positioned to advance a broader, forward-looking initiative—one that goes beyond a single land category to safeguard all public lands, including parks, plazas, parking areas, cultural landscapes, and open space. Such an initiative would ensure that these shared community assets cannot be repurposed, privatized, or diminished without clear, direct public consent, reflecting Los Altos’ values of transparency, stewardship, and long-term community benefit.
